YAEL HARNIK
1.4.2024-6.6.2024
Cotton velvet, indigo
Dimensions: 110x180cm
Year: 2024
The work continues Yael's exploration of the sense of time through unweaving, as an act of making a mark by subtraction. In this work it is the persistence of a repetitive action that creates a routine in the rhythm of manual labor and exposes it in its material trace. Each section was unweaved in a single day, and the velvet segments between the unweaved sections mark the passage between the days. The size of these segments correlates to the time passed between the days, for example, a one day gap, a two days gap, etc.
״In a way, the work is a sort of calendar that reveals my own routine in the studio and my state of mind. It also touches upon the differences between my experience of time in Japan (where I lived for six years) and my experience of time in Israel – particularly ever since October 7, 2023, when counting time ,in relation to the duration of the war, and the captivity of the hostages, has become a daily routine. In addition, the work stirs thoughts about a kind of perception of time in which the intervals between times are what remains present in the material״.
